Search… is dead

Or as this author puts says, search as we know it is dead.  Search becomes social, essentially:

My mind’s too simple to make sense of it all, but it looks like there are some big things coming.

    Ehh…I’ve been reading “Search is Dead” articles since 2005. Search is always dying for a different reason each time… I think the valid point in this article is that search, and the web in general, is becoming more social. As people have new ways to interact online they tend to ask each other for advice, as in natural social settings. However, that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped searching. I may ask my friends for a restaurant recommendation, but there are some things I would not ask them because they simply aren’t experts in that matter. Or I may ask them, but also do some research on my own in those cases. If search was dying as a result of social networks, then I’d imagine Facebook would be doing a lot better in terms of revenue…

    I also take issue with the idea that the digital ‘footprint’ I leave behind by virtue of previous searches, preferences, shopping history, etc. ought to inform the lens through which I receive new information. What interested me yesterday may not interest me today. Almost by definition, I am searching for something I DON’T already know. The internet is about shattering our sheltered little cocoons, not reinforcing them… isn’t it?
