case study - CNN Kiosk Software
Working closely with Green Grass Creative, we set out to design and build software to be used as a driving force in multiple on-site marketing tour events for CNN. Objectives were many, and ranged from creating a method for CNN to elicit user feedback on a variety of thought-provoking topics, to the nuts and bolts of a user-friendly system for automatically encoding user videos that required minimal input from event staff, as well as strengthening the user's connection with CNN through an engaging and memorable interactive experience.
In partnership with CNN's mobile tour design and implementation vendors, we designed a kiosk software system with a Flash user-interface and a PHP back-end that could capture video and audio, encode it into the proper format(s), store all of the data associated with the recording, format it all per CNN's specifications, and transmit it to their servers automatically. We collaborated with multiple project stakeholders and participants to map out and implement a system that is flexible, easy to administer and can be re-skinned and repurposed for multiple uses and events.
So far, our kiosks have been successfully deployed on the tour for the Black in America campaign, and are in the field for the Fit Nation campaign tour starting in late May. CNN was very pleased with the results of the BIA tour, and hundreds of user videos recorded by the kiosks are currently viewable at iReport.com. Our early success has led to an expanded version of the kiosk system that is set to go on the road with the much larger CNN Election Express Yourself tour. In addition to recording and transmitting iReports, the kiosks for the EEY tour will also include the ability to let users respond to videotaped questions in a simulated interview with famous CNN Political Correspondents like Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer.
Aw, you
shouldn't have...
I speak for both Angela and myself when I express how excited we are about the new site and its capabilities! Everyone here is buzzing about how great it is... It is everything we hoped it could be! (And it's pretty too!)
